Dari kata Salib sudah dapat di artikan terdiri dari 2 palang yang bersilangan.

Fungsi salib dari pernyataan Ulangan 21: 22 adalah merupakan salah satu bentuk Hukuman Mati.

Berdasarakan kitab ulangan yang disebutkan diatas maka Bentuk dasar yang awal dari sebuah SALIB adalah sebuah Tiang atau sebatang kayu.

Karena dengan sebatang kayu yang panjang pun dapat digunakan untuk digunakan sebgai Tiang gantung.

Didalam Perjanjian Lama di gunakan kata “Tiang” atau dalam bahasa Inggris “Tree”

Ulangan 21:22

“Apabila seseorang berbuat dosa yang sepadan dengan hukuman mati, lalu ia dihukum mati, kemudian kaugantung dia pada sebuah tiang.

Deuteronomy 21:22

“If a man has committed a sin deserving of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree”

Berdasarkan sejarah Salib memiliki beberapa bentuk dan diantaranya yang sudah umum adalah berbentuk:

1.  Crux commissa,

Tau Cross also known as the Crux Commissa, Old Testament, Anticipatory, Advent, or St. Anthony’s Cross. The Tau Cross is so named from the Hebrew alphabet‘s last letter ‘X’, which was pronounced ‘Taw’. This same sound transliterates to the Greek letter ‘T’. 2. Crux Immissa

The posh name for this most common of all crosses is Crux Immissa. This simply means a cross with a horizontal beam inserted at right-angles to the upright post. . Immissa means ‘inserted’, and this is the more common form of the Christian cross.

There are two variations:

crux humilis – a Low Cross, where the victim’s feet were close to the ground.

crux sublimisTall Cross, where the victim was high off the ground.

3. Crux decussata

St. Andrew’s Cross also called a Saltire. It is believed that the apostle Andrew was crucified on a saltire (X-shaped) cross; hence the name St. Andrew’s Cross. He is said to have told his executioners that he was not worthy to be crucified on the same cross style as Jesus, and persuaded them to alter the shape.

A saltire, Saint Andrew’s Cross, or crux decussata (though it is never called the last in heraldry), is a heraldic symbol in the form of a diagonal cross or letter X. Saint Andrew is said to have been martyred on such a cross.
